Point of View: an Autobiography

Point of View is the result of a creative collaboration between vocalist/guitarist, Matt Schroeder, and drummer, Matt Nordhausen. The two met while attending Fredonia State College in 2000, where both were majoring in Music Education. One night while discussing music and other topics, the two quickly came to realize that they had very similar tastes in music, and that both had aspirations of putting together a rock group to perform for the area's over-abundance of bars and musical outlets. Soon after, the pair began searching for a bassist, and horn players. Their needs were met with the addition of the lovely Alexis St. Clair on bass and vocals, and the insatiable John Hacker on trumpet, trombone, or pretty much any horn they needed. All had been good friends since beginning their careers at Fredonia in 1998, but had never realized that they had similar tastes in music, or that they all played these various instruments.

The group began as 3143 (Thirty-one, Forty-three), and performed various classic and modern rock covers, splashed with an original or two. They became the house band for Vocal Point, which was a vocal show choir comprised of Fredonia students. They continued to play in the Fredonia area until their graduation in 2002, which caused members Alexis and John to leave the group as they returned to their respective homes in Albany and Long Island.

At this time, Schroeder introduced bassist Andy Leon, a long-time friend and fellow band mate of previous projects, to Nordhausen for consideration. The three then added keyboardist Joe Donahue and saxophonist Greg Connell. Now under the name Point of View, the band augmented their repertoire to include classic rock, modern rock, and traditional Irish music. After having a successful summer concert season, playing throughout the Buffalo area at places such as Gillie's Sports Bar and Central Park Grill, the band went on hiatus as Donahue and Connell left for college. Once again finding themselves in need of musicians, but having the core of Nordhausen, Schroeder, and Leon still intact, they began to search for replacements.

It didn't take long for P.O.V. to find two amazing musicians to join their ranks. While teaching music in his new position with the Le Roy Central School District, Nordhausen had the great fortune of meeting Brad Meholick, who was heading up the high school instrumental program at Le Roy. Brad, a keyboardist and saxophonist with numerous performance credits, grasped the opportunity to play in the group. At the same time, Schroeder recruited one of Buffalo's premier fiddle/violin artists, Gretchen Dexheimer, to join the ranks. With these two final additions, Point of View has taken on a whole new dimension, adding new music, sounds, and personalities to offer its fans.

Point of View is currently performing in the Buffalo and Rochester areas of New York State. The versatility of the band allows P.O.V. to delve into almost any genre of music, as each member plays several instruments. Songs range from oldies such as Van Morrison's classic, "Brown Eyed Girl" and "I'm a Believer" by The Monkees to harder classic rock tunes such as Eric Clapton's "White Room" and "Sympathy for the Devil" by The Rolling Stones. More modern tunes are also performed such as "Good Boy" by Barenaked Ladies and songs from Dave Matthews Band that feature Dexheimer on the fiddle. Another unique strength of the band are Irish tunes such as "Finnegan's Wake" and "Whiskey in the Jar" that can be heard in pubs across Ireland. The fun doesn't stop there as the band gets the crowd laughing with the fiddle instrumental, "Orange Blossom Special" and the always hilarious "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash. With such diversity and adaptability compiled with a sense of humor, Point of View is truly a band for any occasion.
